Creating a "college-going culture" in their schools is something they are evalutated on regularly. In addition, reporting their activities to district personnel related to this push is mandatory. What are they to do? It's similiar to teachers having to ram the nonstop "constant testing will improve your abilities" lie down the throats of their students. They don't like it, but they have no choice.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3903698425036113784.post-75932228851657217132012-04-01T16:10:00.182-04:002012-04-01T16:10:00.182-04:00Why would ANYONE go into teaching these days? It was serious all right. Serious enough to get him removed from the class room for asking that he have a real peer evaluate him. Serious enough to get CTA and Elia and Steele sweating bullets-- they can't stand negative publicity. What is serious is how flawed this new system is. As for CTA, CTA doesn't need a pat on the back for doing what they are supposed to do--support teachers when they are right. Joe did the right thing by going to the Times after emails to the district and the union were ineffective. Thanks Marlene Sokol, the Times for writing the story, for bring some light to this ongoing "dog and pony show" of an evaluation process.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3903698425036113784.post-38589001972756316092011-11-16T18:17:42.971-05:002011-11-16T18:17:42.971-05:00Hey Joe, was the CTA's support worth the $600+...Hey Joe, was the CTA's support worth the $600+ a year dues?
Somebody tell the new kids!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3903698425036113784.post-58532045369085412832011-11-15T19:41:13.457-05:002011-11-15T19:41:13.457-05:00Got nothing to say about Joe Thomas? The national average is 2.92 percent. The statement that public employees in Florida do not contribute to their retirement, or that Florida is the only state where public employees do not contribute to their retirement is a complete distortion of the truth. Unfortunately, it has been repeated so often that even those who made it up believe it. There are 80,000 units of government in the United States that have public pension plans and Florida is one of them. Florida is unique only in its inclusion of so many public employees in one system. Over half of the teachers, or other public employees, in the United States do not contribute to Social Security, but they do contribute to their public pension plans. In Florida public employees, most of which are not state employees, contribute to Social Security but not to FRS. FRS became non-contributory in 1974 to stop refunds to non-vested.
All FRS public employees in Florida do contribute to their own retirement through some combination of 403(b)'s, 457's, and Social Security. The statement by the Florida Chamber of Commerce and others that public employees in Florida do not contribute to their retirement is a complete and total falsehood. Furthermore, in the private sector, employer's match 401(k) contributions of their employees, whereas, public employees contributions to 403(b)'s are not matched.
In 1974 FRS became a non-contributory system because of the enormous cost of refunding contributions of employees who did not stay employed long enough to become vested. The proposed legislation will return us to the system that existed prior to 1974 which was deemed at the time to be fiscally unsound.
The proposals before the legislature will reduce the spendable income of 655,000 workers in the state of Florida. This will take between $1 and $1.5 billion out of the economy of Florida each year going forward. Does this sound like something we should do to help with our economic recovery?DocStephenshttp://www.tampabay.com/opinion/editorials/steps-toward-sensible-pension-reform/1165457noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3903698425036113784.post-28570012997156739712011-04-20T13:48:56.786-04:002011-04-20T13:48:56.786-04:00If you commplain about the state legislature restr...If you commplain about the state legislature restructuring teacher evaluations, them HCTA must shoulder the blame, too.
