7 NAMES YOU CAN'T SAY AT THE SCHOOL BOARD PODIUM - BIG ED CONNECTION

School Board Chairwoman Makes Name-Dropping Rule

TAMPA - Hillsborough County School Board chairwoman Jennifer Faliero announced at Tuesday's meeting that speakers coming before the board "will be called out of order if you use anyone's name."

One regular speaker, Lee DeCesare, suggested the board should check with its attorney, saying the decree violates the right to free speech.

When DeCesare later named a teacher she said had been wronged by a principal for speaking out, Faliero banged her gavel and told her, "You are out of order."

Faliero then directed district security Chief Dave Friedberg to escort DeCesare out of the room.

School district spokesman Steve Hegarty later said, "That is not a part of the official statement that she reads," adding, "I don't know if that is what she will read the next time."

The board approved the promotion of Pansy Houghton, supervisor of choice technology, to director of student planning and placement.

So Hagerty knew about it, Freidberg knew about it, Gonzalez (Gonzie) heard it and yet none of these officials had the balls to tell the Chairwoman there was a First Amendment "problem"?

Is there any testosterone left in the room?

Pansy Houghton was formerly employed by E.T.S. (Electronic Testing Services) but has worked with HCPS since 2000-2001 at least! So let's not rejoice in the hiring of an OUTSIDER!!!!

Is Pansy Dubose Houghton related to Renalia (Renee) Dubose, former head of Staff Development?

Consider the implications of someone whose background is BigED multiple choice, bubble-in, computerized grading.

"Software Review" by Lee Schroeder and Pansy Houghton

Schroeder and Houghton discuss the strengths and weaknesses of introducing technology to reduce or even substitute for the need to have face-to-face meetings to review test questions. The column describes the use of a modem to conduct a conference over a single telephone line that shares voice and computer data simultaneously.

"Software Review" by Lee Schroeder and Pansy Dubose Houghton

Lee Schroeder's column applies his criteria for evaluating an item-banking system (published in a previous CERcolumn) to two item-banking systems that were sent to him for review. One of Lee's associates, Pansy Houghton, reviews LXR-Test 5.0 and The Question Bank.

Not that I am eager to defend the actions of the school board, but Ms. Decesare's comments continued after she was told that her time had expired. She could have been considered to be a disruptive element for that reason. That being said, Ms. Decesare did voluntarily leave the podium well before the Board Chair started what appeared to be a personal and premeditated rant, declaring Ms. Desesare to be out of order and calling on the security official to "do his thing". This call to action was clearly unwarranted. It looked to me like the Board Chair has a personal vendetta and acted unprofessionally. Please note, I am stupid enough to be signing with my real name...

Good lord, I thought Dr. Pansy was a step up. The wall makes her sound like a colluder. Wouldn't you know this would be Elia's answer to my nagging about advertising administrative jobs? Ripped off again.

To the person making the case for the board chair's behavior.He/ she said he/she signed his/her name, but I don't see it.

One of the school board member's lights was still on and Dr. Lamb tried to tell Falliera it was, but she was determined to have her pound of flesh from the woman who exposed her school-site adultery. The security behemoth also exceeded his mandate when he ordered me off th epremises or be arrested. One is only removed from the board room according to the rules, not ordered off the premises and threatened with arrest. The main point is that the the chair, the board, and the attorney all violated my free-speech rights. Free speech trumps everything else. If we don't have free speech, we don't have democracy. lee

I believe part of the human condition is wanting to believe that people are basically good.

We also tend to hope that those who aren't will, at some point, try to do the right thing.

This often leads us to accept things unvetted. It is a sign that we are not quite "tarnished".

We've got some slick politicians at ROSSAC.

BTW: Is Dr. Pansy Dubose Houghton related to Renalia (Renee) Dubose who used to be head of Staff Development a few years back?

The Isley Brothers:

"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
I will tell you, who to sock it to.
"Do your thing", when I tell you to,

You need love now, and I'm gonna make ya wail.
Make's me no difference now, just take that lady to jail.

"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
I will tell you, who to sock it to.

I will tell you, who to sock it to.

[Instrumental]

"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
I will tell you, who to sock it to.

I'm not trying to ruin your life, I'm your boss and the time is right.
Give the boot now, to whoever I choose.

"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
I will tell you, who to sock it to.
"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
I will tell you, who to sock it to.

"Do your thing", when I tell you to,
